Tips: how to run effective one on one meetings
It’s one of those things no-one shows you how to do. An employee asks you for a one-on-one meeting but there’s no standard for one-on-ones. Maybe if you’re lucky you had a good manager who you picked up some tips from. But management styles vary so what works for one person doesn’t mean it’s going to work for everyone else.
It's not what you do, it's the way that you do it
A one on one meeting isn’t some management magic, it’s what you do in one on one meetings with staff that counts. Management magic comes from creating the sort of workplace that your employees get job satisfaction. Because then your employees are motivated and produce great work. To the outside observer it looks like magic because they can’t see why your employees are better than theirs. So other bosses blame their employee performance problems on their staff (which is kind of ironic because they hired them). But you and I know that great employee performance is the sign of a great boss.
That's why I made a mini-course on one-on-ones (including a one to one template with a one to one meeting agenda) which will show you 3 Steps 2 Easy 1 on 1's. What I expect you'll find is that you already know some of the content on some type of level but maybe you're not putting it into practice. This will help. As I say this is essential for new managers and helpful for experienced managers.

Employee motivation by relationships, growth and communication
Employee retention and engagement comes from really simple basics like:
Employees having a great relationship and open communications with their boss and colleagues
Employees feeling like their contribution is acknowledged and that they are doing meaningful work
Employees who are growing, learning new skills, getting new responsibilities and progressing in their careers
Employees having the flexibility to do work the way they think it should be done
And so if you want to have great one on one meetings with staff, all you have to do is structure your one on ones around these topics. Then your one on ones will become the source of your Boss Power.
CONCLUSION
There is no standard for one on one meetings with staff, if you look it up the definition only says that it’s a meeting between two people: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/one-on-one . But having high quality, effective one on one meetings with your employees creates employee motivation and engagement. As with all management it’s not what you do but how you do it that makes the difference and that’s why I’ve got a one to one template (including a one to one meeting agenda) for you to download:
