Hiring is difficult

You think you've found the right candidate for your team. Qualifications, experience and personality all seem like a good fit. But how can you be sure? Job candidates are becoming savvier. They're on their best behavior in the interview. Will the candidate you choose perform equally well on the job?

AVOID HIRING DISASTER - DO A REFERENCE CHECK

Conducting reference checks is one of the most important steps in the selection process. Past performance is often the best indicator of future performance. References allow you to talk to past supervisors in order to determine if the applicant being considered is suited for the role. Asking the right questions will reduce the risk of a bad hire.

WHAT DO THE EXPERTS HAVE TO SAY?

So you made it through a gauntlet of interviews, and you’ve shared a list of glowing references. Kevin Chou, the CEO of Kabam, goes one step further by checking “back-door” references

“Know that your reputation and accomplishments speak louder than your answers in a job interview. What’s said about you often carries more weight than what you say about yourself.”

— Kevin Chou
